Doha women writing studentsteaching in Qatar

In October, 2008, I took my third trip to Qatar, this time to work on a second essay collection, Qatar: Then & Now.

I taught
two workshops a day to students and community members and helped launch a new writing program: Finding Your Voice, funded by local sponsors including a bank, an art center, and a real estate office.

Earlier
in the year I enjoyed a fascinating six-week residency in Qatar, where I taught writing to a group of Qatar University students and to the QU library staff.

Testimonials

"I have just returned from
an incredible week in the
South of France with Carol Henderson at
the helm of a writers’ workshop.
I can’t say
enough about
it. The accommodations, companionship, scenery, outings, adventures and food, were only outdone by the time spent with Carol discov
ering hidden voices. Writing
is no longer a labor, not
always inspired, but always a
joy. Thank you
so much Carol,
it was a life changing event for me. I can’t wait to attend
the next one.
"
--Sandra Elliot,
Chapel Hill, NC

"My time spent
at Carol's
writing work-shop in Provence
was a life changing event.
I will always remember it
with great joy
as one of the
best weeks of
my life!
"
--Kit Stewart, entrepreneur and author, Pittsboro, NC

"In Provence, with Carol and our workshop,
I found the
peace and contentment
with which to explore my thoughts, as
well as the encouragement and support to write and share them. It was
also an enormously
fun time."
–Liza Collins,
playwright and screenwriter, Providence, RI

"Carol Henderson's workshop was exactly what I needed to jumpstart my writing... it
was a productive and fun week."
–Stephanie Silberstein, Writer, Fayetteville, NC

"My goal for the writing residency was to be motivated to
get back to my writing of a memoir that deals with my journey from mourning to joy. You provided
that motivation and inspiration for doing just that... Thank
you for the integrity and vulnerability
with which you facilitated our work together."
–Wilson Brent, pastor (ret.) Cary, NC

Writer, Teacher, Coach

If life experience is the best preparation for a writer, I began with some definite advantages. I've been everything from a professional dancer to a licensed massage therapist. I've worked as a community organizer, a
grocery clerk, and an arts administrator. Years back, I even did some ghost-writing for my husband, when he was an in-demand freelance copywriter.

Such a crazy-quilt background would count against me in some professions. I've come to understand it's the perfect preparation for a writer.

Raised in New Jersey, schooled in Ohio, I married a rock musician from the South and settled down to live happily ever after. But surprise! "Happily ever after" isn't bestowed casually...you get it the old-fashioned way, by earning it. About the time I became a young mother, I launched my freelance writing career because we had bills to pay.

I wish I could say it was something I had always planned to do--it wasn't. And I was scared to death. Who was I to write anything? Where should I start? How could I ever get published?

After many false starts, I began to write what I knew: parenting pieces, articles and columns about children, parenting styles, marriage. I didn't feel confident I could succeed, but I put one foot in front of the other, and before long, I had a book, a regular newspaper column, and good magazine contacts.
